Here’s a question worth sitting with: when one of your customers asks ChatGPT, Google’s AI Overviews or Perplexity which product to buy, what does the answer point to? More and more, it points to creator content. AI search is quietly rewiring how people find things to buy, and the content it leans on is real people explaining, testing and demonstrating, not brand adverts. If you’ve been wondering where creator content and AI search collide, this is it, and it’s already shaping what gets recommended.
I make this kind of content for a living, so I’ve been watching the research closely. The numbers are clearer than I expected, and they’re genuinely good news for brands that don’t have a massive influencer budget.
What the research actually found.
The agency Jellyfish analysed 27 million responses across seven AI assistants, including ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Meta AI and Perplexity. YouTube creator content showed up in over 25% of the prompts those assistants answered. In high-intent categories like consumer electronics and financial services, that climbed to nearly one in two responses. So when someone is close to spending money and asks an AI for help, there’s a real chance a creator video is sitting inside the answer they get back.
The part I keep coming back to: Jellyfish found that independent, niche creators outrank brand-owned content and celebrity influencers in those AI answers. In the household and CPG space alone, more than a million unique YouTube videos are cited by AI assistants every day in the US. The AI isn’t reaching for the glossiest brand film. It’s reaching for the person who actually showed the thing working. You can read Adweek’s write-up of the Jellyfish data if you want the full breakdown.
The biggest channels aren’t the ones getting cited.
This is where it gets interesting for smaller brands. A separate study from OtterlyAI looked at more than 100 million AI citations to work out which videos actually get picked up. Follower count barely mattered. Views, likes and subscriber numbers all showed near-zero correlation with how often a video was cited. In their data, 40.83% of cited videos had fewer than 1,000 views, and 35% of the channels behind them had under 10,000 subscribers. The full OtterlyAI citation study is worth a read.
What did matter was structure and usefulness. Long-form, reference-style videos took 94% of citations, while Shorts picked up just 5.7%. The AI treats a clear, well-organised explainer the way it treats a well-written article: it wants the bit that answers the question, cleanly. Popularity is not the signal. Being the best answer is.
Why this is quietly great news for brands.
For years the message to brands was that you had to buy reach. Big follower counts, big fees, big names. AI search is loosening that grip. If a 700-view video from a creator nobody’s heard of can land in an AI answer because it explains the product clearly, then the thing you’re actually buying is clarity and credibility, not audience size.
That’s the whole case for UGC, and now there’s a second reason it pays off. Real creator content already converts better than polished ads because it feels like a friend’s recommendation. On top of that, it’s the exact format AI search is pulling into the answers your customers see before they ever reach your site. You’re not choosing between content for people and content for the algorithm any more. The genuine, useful version wins in both places.
What to actually do about it.
A few things move the needle here, and none of them require a huge budget. Make content that answers a real question your customers are asking, in plain language, with the product actually on screen doing its job. Favour clear, structured explainers and demonstrations over quick throwaway clips, because those are what get cited. And keep it human. The whole reason AI reaches for creator content is that it reads as trustworthy and lived-in, which is precisely what a scripted brand advert isn’t.
The brands that win the next couple of years won’t be the ones shouting loudest. They’ll be the ones whose products keep turning up in the answers, because a real person made something clear and honest enough to be worth citing. That’s the content I film, edit and deliver, ready to post and built to be believed.
