TikTok vs Reels vs Shorts is the question I get asked most by brands, usually with a follow-up: which one should we actually post on? The honest answer is that they are not three versions of the same thing. They look identical – vertical, short, sound-on – but each one does a different job, and where your UGC lives should come down to what you want it to do.
They share a format, not a purpose.
TikTok is built for discovery. Reels keeps the people who already follow you close. Shorts plays the long game of search and the living room. Post the same clip to all three and you will get three different results, and that is not a fault – it is the point. Pick the platform to match the goal, then let the content do its job.
TikTok is your discovery engine.
TikTok is where cold audiences find you. It shows content to people who do not follow you yet, based on what they watch rather than who they know. That is why it is still the fastest route to reach for a brand nobody has heard of. People give it the time, too: the average user spends around 95 minutes a day in the app, more than any other social network, according to Backlinko’s roundup of the DataReportal figures. If your goal is to get in front of new people quickly, this is the one. Post here when you are launching, testing angles, or simply trying to be found.
Reels keeps the people who already like you close.
Reels is strongest when you already have a following on Instagram. It pushes to non-followers too, but its real power is re-warming the audience you have built. Instagram’s ranking leans heavily on watch time and shares – how long people stay, and how often they send your video to a friend in a DM, as its 2026 algorithm guide from Buffer lays out. That second signal matters for brands: a Reel that gets sent privately is a recommendation, which is exactly what good UGC is for. Post here to stay in front of your customers and turn quiet followers into people who bring their mates.
Shorts is quietly a search engine.
Shorts is the one brands underrate. It sits inside YouTube, which means your video can keep getting found months later through search – someone types “is this actually worth it” and your clip is the answer. The scale is hard to ignore: Shorts now average over 200 billion views a day, YouTube’s CEO shared at Cannes Lions. And it is not all phones. Over a billion hours of YouTube get watched on TVs every day, and for more than half of the top 100 channels the telly is now the main screen. Post here when you want your UGC working long after you hit publish, and when you want a shot at the living room.
A view does not mean the same thing on each app.
Here is the trap. Each platform counts a view differently – some the second a video starts to play, some after a few seconds of watching. So comparing raw view counts across TikTok, Reels and Shorts tells you almost nothing. Watch-through, saves, shares and comments are the numbers worth reading, because they show someone actually cared. Judge each platform on its own terms, not on a headline number that means something different in every place you look.
Film once, cut for each.
You do not need three separate shoots. I film once and cut three versions – same story, tuned per platform. TikTok gets the fastest hook and a trending sound. Reels gets clean captions and a share-worthy payoff. Shorts gets a clear, searchable spin, with a title and opening line that answer a real question. Same footage, three edits, three jobs done. That is how you show up everywhere without burning your budget on three sets of content.
So where should your UGC live?
If you are new and need to be found, start with TikTok. If you have an audience and want to keep them close, lead with Reels. If you want content that keeps working for months, do not sleep on Shorts. Most brands I work with end up on all three – but they lead with the one that matches the goal in front of them, and they do not expect the same clip to behave the same way everywhere.
Want UGC that is built for the platform, not just posted to it? I film, edit and deliver ready-to-post video for TikTok, Reels and Shorts – cut for each, handled end to end. Have a look at my packages, or email me at [email protected] and tell me what you are launching.
