UGC vs branded content: why real people beat polished ads

If you’re weighing up UGC vs branded content for your next campaign, the honest answer is already in the data – and it isn’t close. In Emplifi’s Q3 2025 social media benchmarks, posts featuring user-generated content drove 10.38x higher conversion rates than posts without it. Not ten percent better. Ten times.

I make UGC for a living, so of course I’d say real people beat polished ads. Which is exactly why this post leans on published research rather than my opinion. Every number below links straight to its original source, so you can check my working before you spend a penny.

The numbers, upfront.

  • Social posts with UGC converted at 10.38x the rate of non-UGC posts in Q3 2025, and the pattern held into 2026 with a 6.7x lift in Q1 (Emplifi).
  • 55% of shoppers say they’re unlikely to buy a product at all without shopper content to inform their decision (Bazaarvoice Shopper Experience Index).
  • 74% of shoppers trust UGC more than brand-provided content on product pages, and 78% feel more confident buying after seeing it (Bazaarvoice, same study).
  • 81% of ecommerce marketers believe visual UGC resonates more with customers than professionally shot photos or influencer content (Nosto survey of 202 ecommerce marketers).

Conversions first.

Conversion rate is the number your finance team actually cares about, so let’s start there. Emplifi tracks thousands of brand accounts every quarter, and the gap between UGC and everything else keeps showing up. Q2 2025: 5.29x. Q3 2025: 10.38x. Q1 2026: 6.7x. The exact multiple moves around, but the direction never does. Content made by real people outsells content made by brands, quarter after quarter.

The same benchmarks found UGC posts drove more website visits and higher average order values too. So it isn’t a case of scrappy content winning cheap clicks – the people it brings in spend more.

Shoppers trust each other, not ads.

Why the gap? Trust. Bazaarvoice surveyed more than 7,000 shoppers worldwide and found 74% trust user-generated content more than anything the brand says about itself on a product page. More striking: over half said they’re unlikely to buy without it. Your beautifully art-directed product shots aren’t just underperforming – if that’s all a shopper can find, many will simply close the tab.

That matches what I see from the creator side every week. People have spent twenty years learning to scroll past anything that looks like an ad. A video shot on a phone, in real light, by someone who sounds like a mate? That gets watched to the end. If you’re new to the format, my guide to what UGC is and why brands are using it covers the basics.

Even the marketers admit it.

The Nosto research is my favourite of the lot, because it asked the people spending the budgets. Of 202 ecommerce marketers surveyed, 81% said visual UGC resonates more with customers than professional photography or influencer content. 85% agreed it keeps costs down compared to pro shoots. And when asked which content type earns the most customer trust, UGC came top at 33% – double the score of AI-generated visuals at 16%, with stock imagery trailing at 8%.

Read that back: the industry making polished ads has quietly concluded that polished ads aren’t the thing customers believe.

Why polish works against you.

None of this means production values are bad. It means the feed has its own native language, and glossy isn’t it. A 30-second commercial dropped into TikTok announces itself as an interruption. UGC speaks the platform’s language – vertical, handheld, hooked in the first two seconds, captioned like a text from a friend. It doesn’t trip the ad alarm in people’s heads, so it earns the watch time, and watch time is what the algorithm rewards.

There’s a cost angle too. A UGC video costs a fraction of a studio shoot, which changes how you test. Instead of betting the quarter’s budget on one perfect ad, you can run three or four different angles, see what lands, and put spend behind the winner.

How to put the numbers to work.

Start small and measure. Brief one or two creators, test a couple of different hooks, and run the best performer as a paid ad against your current branded creative. Give it two weeks. The benchmarks above suggest what you’ll find, but your own dashboard is the only stat that matters.

If you’d like content that feels like a friend’s recommendation rather than a 30-second ad, that’s exactly what I make – filmed, edited and delivered ready to post. Have a look at my packages or drop me a line at [email protected] and tell me what you’re selling.
