UGC retainer vs one-off videos: which is right for your brand

Most brands find me one of two ways. Either they want a single video for a launch or a paid-social test, or they want a steady stream of content every month and they are tired of starting from scratch each time. That is the UGC retainer vs one-off videos question in a nutshell, and the right answer depends less on your budget than on what you are actually trying to build. Here is how I talk brands through it, as the person who films and edits both.

What a one-off UGC video actually gets you.

A one-off is exactly what it sounds like. You brief me on one product or one angle, I film and edit it, and you get a ready-to-post video with the usage rights you paid for. It is clean, it is contained, and it is the right call when you have a specific job to do: a product drop, a seasonal push, a single ad you want to test before you spend more.

The catch is that every one-off starts cold. I am learning your product, your tone and what your team will sign off on, all inside one video. That first project carries the full cost of getting up to speed, and you feel it in the price per video and sometimes in an extra round of revisions while we find your voice together. Do it once and that is fine. Do it every month with a different creator each time and you are paying that learning tax over and over.

What a UGC retainer changes.

A retainer is a monthly agreement for a set number of videos. Instead of pitching and re-briefing every time, we lock in the volume, the deliverables and the usage window up front, and I keep making content for you month after month. If you want the full breakdown of how that works, I wrote a separate guide on what a UGC retainer is.

The real shift is familiarity. By the third or fourth month I know your product inside out, I know which hooks land with your audience and I know what your team will approve without three rounds of notes. That means tighter first drafts, fewer reshoots and footage I can cut into more than one format. The cost of getting up to speed gets spread across dozens of videos instead of being baked into every single one, which is why booking volume almost always works out cheaper per video than buying the same number as separate one-offs.

The case for retainers is getting stronger.

This is not just my preference talking. The supply of creators reliably making content is tightening. According to New Engen’s August 2026 influencer marketing trends, 55% of Americans are posting less than they did five years ago and 51% say keeping up a social presence “feels like work”, citing Incogni’s 2026 survey. On the creator side, more than half now earn under $15,000 a year from their content, up from 48% two years earlier, per Influencer Marketing Hub’s 2025 Creator Earnings Report. The people still showing up consistently are getting harder to book, and New Engen’s read is that the brands moving now are locking in longer-term relationships with a smaller number of committed creators rather than treating the roster as an always-replenishing pool.

There is a volume reason too. One shoot rarely lives in one place any more. CreatorIQ’s Creator-Powered Funnel report found that 100% of the marketers it surveyed repurpose creator content across other channels, and that creator content now makes up 44% of brands’ paid media creative on average, with more than eight in ten reporting at least 2x return. Feeds move in hours, and paid social eats through creative fast. If you need ten, twenty, thirty assets a month feeding your TikTok, Reels and ads, a retainer is built for that pace. A one-off is not.

Where one-offs still make sense.

I am not going to talk you into a retainer you do not need. If you have never worked with a UGC creator before, a one-off is the sensible way to try me out with low commitment. If you are running a single campaign with a hard start and end date, or testing whether a creator style even works for your product, one or two videos will tell you what you need to know. And if your posting is genuinely occasional, paying monthly for content you cannot use fast enough is just waste. Start with a one-off, see the results, then scale into a retainer when the demand is actually there.

So which is right for your brand.

Here is the short version. Choose one-off videos when you are testing the water, running a one-time campaign or your content needs are sporadic. Choose a retainer when you are posting consistently, testing creative in paid social every week or trying to keep an always-on feed fed without the monthly scramble. The deciding question is not “what can I afford this month”, it is “am I doing this once or am I doing this all the time”. If the honest answer is all the time, a retainer will cost you less per video and save you the re-briefing every single round. If you want to sanity-check the numbers first, my guide to what UGC costs in the UK lays out the going rates.

Still not sure which way to go? Tell me what you are posting and how often, and I will tell you straight whether a one-off or a retainer fits. You can see monthly options on my UGC retainer page, check current rates at jibcreatives.com/#pricing, or just email me at [email protected] and we will work out what your brand actually needs.
